30 tons of black barberry from cultivated areas of East Azerbaijan
The horticultural director of the East Azerbaijan Jihad Agricultural Organization said: This year, more than 30 tons of black barberry will be harvested from the cultivated lands of the province and will be offered to the consumer markets.
Sadaleh Eskandari was quoted as saying by the public relations of the Jihad Agricultural Organization of the province: The area under cultivation of fertile barberry in East Azerbaijan is 30 hectares and the area under cultivation in the city of Osko is eight hectares, which is one third of the orchards of this crop in the province. And in this regard, it ranks first in provincial production.
He said that the types of barberry in the world are mostly known as a medicinal and ornamental plant, but its seedless type is consumed in Iran as a dried fruit, he added: Barberry is a native product of Iran and its seedless type in southern Khorasan, especially Ghaen and Birjand have been cultivated and its cultivation is common in France, Japan, India and Mexico.
The director of horticulture of Jihad Agricultural Organization of the province, pointing out that this plant is tolerant to salinity and water shortage and is compatible with water and soil texture of Urmia Lake, said: the harvest time of this product is from mid-October to the end of November It is often done by cutting a branch that makes it easy to dry.
Eskandari mentioned the lack of barberry health centers, lack of proper knowledge of people about the nutritional and medicinal properties of barberry and the lack of organization in exporting this product as slow factors in the development of its cultivated areas in the province and added: Barberry is one of the few plants with roots, stems and leaves. Its flowers and bark are used for various food, medicine and industrial purposes, so that a total of 89 items of medicine are obtained from the fruits, stems and leaves of this valuable plant. For the development of cultivation and barberry in our country, special attention should be paid to this product.
