35% reduction in caviar production in Golestan
The director of sturgeon affairs of Golestan province announced: the rate of caviar extraction in the province in a total of two fishing seasons so far, shows a 35% decrease.
Seyed Mostafa Aghili Nejad said: In total, 3,000 kilograms of caviar have been extracted so far this spring and autumn fishing seasons, which has decreased by 35% compared to the same period last year.
He attributed this to the reduction of sturgeon stocks in the Caspian Sea, as well as the illegal exploitation, fishing and smuggling of sturgeon.
According to Aghilinejad, there are two seasons of caviar fishing that spring fishing lasts from early April to June, autumn fishing begins in late September and continues until late March.
The director of Golestan sturgeon affairs reminded: the caviar cultivar extracted this year in Golestan includes 75% of the province’s annual caviar fishing program.
He continued: Also, the amount of three tons of caviar extracted in Golestan province is 50% of the extracted caviar in the country.
It is worth mentioning that considering that Golestan province has the first position of caviar extraction in the country and also considering the current sensitive position of Iranian caviar in the world arena, two projects including protection, reproduction and production of sturgeon and establishment of the largest sturgeon breeding center in the province Golestan was approved during the second visit of the President and the Cabinet in May of this year. The study phase of the project of the largest sturgeon breeding center is currently underway with a credit of 2 billion and 500 million Rials, and the determined goal of establishing this center is to achieve the extraction of 1,450 tons of caviar meat.
