60% of Iran’s caviar quota is provided from Golestan province
The director of sturgeon affairs of Golestan province said: during the last 11 months of this year, a total of 8 thousand and one hundred kilograms of caviar has been extracted in this province, which is 60% of the caviar quota of the whole country.
Mostafa Aghilinejad added: Sturgeon fishing is done by 540 fishermen and 91 fishing boats along one hundred kilometers of the Golestan coastline.
He continued: In this regard, 79% of sturgeon-producing fish in breeding centers in the north of the country are provided by Golestan province.
Aghili Nejad stated: The amount of sturgeon stocks has decreased from 144 million pieces in 1976 to 35 million pieces in 2006.
The director of sturgeon affairs of the province also pointed out that the Caspian Sea is facing a serious crisis in terms of stocks of these fish, and emphasized: During the last 15 years, Golestan alone has witnessed a ten percent decrease in this field.
In the end, he said: sturgeon fishing will reach 9,000 kilograms by the end of this year, which indicates an increase of 1.5 tons of caviar compared to the approved plan for caviar extraction this year.
It is worth mentioning that the price of exported caviar is equal to 1,600 Euros per kilogram.
