The value of Iranian handmade carpet exports in the first nine months of this year fell by 36.65% to $ 209 million.

The latest Iranian customs statistics show that in the first nine months of this year, 3.7 thousand tons of handmade carpets worth approximately $ 209 million were exported from the country. This amount of exports in terms of weight and value has decreased by 15.26 and 36.65 percent, respectively, compared to the same period in 2012.

In the past, handmade carpets were one of the main items in the country’s non-oil exports, which in the first 9 months of this year ranked 23rd among the country’s non-oil exports. The share of this commodity in the total value of the country’s non-oil exports did not reach even one percent.

Of course, it is to be hoped that in December of this year, the trend of export of handmade carpets was upward, so that this month, 600 tons of handmade carpets worth $ 28 million were exported from the country, which in terms of weight and value, 9.78 and 5.94 percent improvement, respectively. Iranian handmade carpets were exported to at least 77 countries in the first 9 months of 2013. Meanwhile, Germany, UAE, Japan, Lebanon, Italy, UK, Pakistan, Qatar, Switzerland, Sweden, France, China, Denmark, South Africa, Kuwait and Afghanistan were among the main export markets for Iranian handmade carpets.

The decline in the export of Iranian handmade carpets has occurred in the first 9 months of this year, while in the budget bill of 1393, 29 billion and 400 million tomans of credit has been allocated to the implementation of domestic and global advertising program for handmade carpets. This budget will be allocated to the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade to be spent on domestic and international advertising of Iranian handmade carpets.

Many experts believe that the weakness of the promotion of Iranian handmade carpets in global markets has led to a decrease in the share of Iranian handmade carpets in these markets in recent years.
