U.S.A. researchers have found that eating high-fat walnuts and fish significantly lowers blood cholesterol and triglycerides and prevents heart problems.

Even in healthy people, consuming small amounts of walnuts and high-fat fish leads to a dramatic reduction in cholesterol and triglycerides, said Sujata Rajaram of the School of Public Health at Loma Linda University and one of the lead authors of the study.

The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that an approximate combination of 1.5 ounces of walnuts – three tablespoons of chopped walnuts – in the daily diet reduced total cholesterol by up to 5.4 percent and bad cholesterol. Also reduces by 3.9 percent.

The researchers also found that a diet high in four ounces of high-fat fish would lower triglyceride levels by 11.4 percent and increase good cholesterol levels by up to 4 percent.

If high-fat fish are not a choice for omega-3 fats, they can use algae oil or DHA-fortified eggs, Rajaram concluded.
