It is not clear what effect political pressures could have on Iran’s pistachio trade, but the thought of losing Iran’s lucrative pistachio markets in the Middle East, Asia and Europe is distressing for pistachio growers, the Washington Post reported.

Ali Asadi, director of a pistachio export company, said: It is not clear whether sanctions will be imposed on Iran or not, but even if the worst of the situation arises, the sanctions will first target state-owned companies and factories, and most of all oil companies. No pistachio exports by private companies.

The pistachio industry generates an average of $ 500 million a year and employs hundreds of thousands of people in a country where 11 percent of the population is unemployed.

Last year, Iran was able to earn $ 824 million from increasing pistachio production to 140,000 tons, most of which was produced in the southeast of the country.

Most of the country’s oil revenues come from the sale of crude oil. Iron, steel, carpet and saffron are other important export items of Iran.
