Grapes are good for protecting the skin from the sun
A group of Spanish experts have found in a new experiment that substances in different types of grapes can significantly
reduce skin cell damage caused by contact with the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
Ultraviolet radiation affects the skin by activating reactive oxygen species, which in turn break down macromolecules and DNA molecules,
said Dr. Marta Cascante, a biochemist at the University of Barcelona and her assistants at the Spanish National Council.
The result of these processes is the stimulation of specific reactions and enzymes such as JNK and P38MAPK that cause cell death.
The results of this new experiment showed that some polyphenols and flavonoids in grapes can reduce the formation of reactive oxygen
species and thus protect human skin epidermal cells from long-term mild UVA and UVB radiation.
