Hormozgan is the largest producer of winter onions in Iran

The director of agriculture of Hormozgan Jihad Agricultural Organization said: this province is the largest producer of winter onions in the country with the area under cultivation of 10 thousand hectares of onions and the production of 200 thousand tons per year.

Kourosh Sadeghi added: 99% of the area under onion cultivation in Hormozgan province is done by indirect planting method and by transferring seedlings from the treasury.

He continued: In this regard, the yield of onion in 1975 increased from 14 tons per hectare to 29 tons per hectare in 2005; Also, early harvest has increased from 400 hectares in 1975 to 8,000 hectares in 2005.

Sadeghi added: Considering the country’s need for winter production in order to make the best use of the region’s potentials and capabilities, this organization has tried to identify early hybrid cultivars compatible with climatic conditions in addition to increasing efficiency to develop early cultivation.
