Fars ranks third in Iran in onion production
The director of agriculture of the Jihad Agricultural Organization of Fars province, said: Fars with an annual production of three hundred and 66 thousand tons of onion is the third in the country.
Ahmad Dehghan, director of agriculture of Jihad Agricultural Organization of Fars province, stated: Fars with 7 thousand 295 hectares of cultivated area and 366 thousand tons of production, 9 and a half percent of cultivated area and 123 and 4 tenths of the production of vegetable and summer products in the province Is dedicated to itself.
He specified: Fars province with eleven and seven tenths percent of the area under cultivation has occupied fifteen and two tenths percent of the country’s onion production, which is considered as the third most important onion production center in the country after East Azerbaijan and Isfahan provinces. .
Dehghan continued: The average onion production in the country was 37 and three tenths of a ton per hectare, which is more than 48 and a half tons per hectare in Fars province.
The director of agriculture of Jihad Agricultural Organization of Fars province added: In the crop year of 1399, 22 different onion cultivars were distributed for free for an area of about 2,800 hectares.
He added: “The most distributed figures are Texas Early Grano, White Grano, Golden Spike and Cirrus and Bono.”
Dehghan said: “According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), onion is an employment-generating agricultural product and food security provider, which has 10 million people in the world and 21,000 Iranian farmers are engaged in the production of this product.”
The director of agriculture of the Jihad Agricultural Organization of Fars province, said: In Fars, with the area under cultivation of 7,295 hectares, 2,080 farmers are directly related to onion cultivation.
He stated that Iran is the sixth largest producer of this product in the world with an annual production of 1.55 million tons of onions.
The director of agriculture of Jihad Agricultural Organization of Fars province, continued: the area of onion in the country is 46,000 hectares of cultivated agricultural lands, of which 99% of onion lands are irrigated and the rest are irrigated.
Dehghan named the onion producing cities in Fars province as Shiraz, Sepidan, Marvdasht, Kavar, Pasargad, Kazerun, Darab, Fasa, Lar, Jahrom and Arsanjan.
The director of agriculture of Fars Jihad Agricultural Organization stated: considering the population of 5 million in Fars province, the per capita consumption of 22 kg of onions is one hundred and 10 thousand tons and the monthly consumption of onions in the province is 9 thousand 167 tons.
He stated: 10% of the province’s onion production, equivalent to 36,600 tons, from waste to supply due to lack of proper packaging, sorting, improper transportation and lack of proper supply of products will be wasted.
Dehghan emphasized: considering the amount of onion production in Fars province with 36 thousand tons, it was about 219 thousand and 400 tons, which in the crop year of 1399 was 13 thousand 963 tons of Persian onions with the currency of 4 thousand and 894 dollars abroad. Exported, which is only 4 and 6 tenths of a percent of the province’s onion production surplus.
Director of Agriculture of Jihad Agricultural Organization of Fars Province, said: Due to the high quality of onions produced in the province, the necessary planning should be done to facilitate the export of onions abroad.
He stated: The months of the year, in order of priority, which Fars province is facing with the increase of onion production, include the months of September, October, June, August, November, July and May.
