How to choose and store onions
Both dried and green onions are available year-round. When buying onions, choose ones that are clean and in good shape. It should be white and avoid buying those that are soft and moldy as this is a sign of poor quality. Rooted onions should be avoided as this indicates improper age and storage.
But if you have sweet rooted onions in the kitchen, you can use green sprouts as an alternative. It should not have black spots under the skin as this is a sign of mold that may damage the skin. They should have a mild odor.
Proper storage of onions
Dried onions can be stored for several months. Whole onions should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, where it takes about 4 weeks.
Avoid putting them in the refrigerator as this will soften them. Because they absorb moisture, they should not be stored under the sink.
Often, onions remain after cooking. This onion can be stored for reuse. They should be packed in plastic or in a sealed container and refrigerated for 2 to 3 days for use.
In addition to proper storage, onions should be checked regularly. Sticky, colorless onions should be discarded. Spring onions can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
