A 60% reduction in cumin production is predicted
The director of horticulture of Yazd Jihad Agricultural Organization announced a 60% reduction in cumin production in this province.
Seyed Jamal Sajjadipour said: In the current crop year, 180 hectares of lands are under cumin cultivation, which according to expert estimates, 75 tons of crop will be harvested from this area, which shows a 60% decrease compared to the previous crop year.
Sajjadipour, referring to the 28% reduction in cumin cultivation area this year, said: Imposing the effects of drought on crop yield and reducing it from 750 to 420 kg per hectare is one of the most important reasons for the 60% decrease in cumin production this year.
He continued: in the last crop year, despite the continuation of drought in 250 hectares of land in the province, cumin was planted and 187 tons of crops were harvested from this area.
Sajjadipour mentioned the value of cumin produced this year as 1.5 billion Rials.
He mentioned Bahabad district as the main center of water cumin production in Yazd province and said: In normal years, cumin is cultivated dry in Tabas cities, but unfortunately this year, lack of rainfall in the growing season has dried up the dry fields.
Cumin is planted in Yazd province from mid-December and is harvested from mid-May to early June.
