Because wood and woodcarvings are inlaid with organic matter and cellulose, they are not very resistant to many biological factors, and unnatural and human factors can cause irreparable damage to these works.
Undoubtedly, the protection and preservation of such works due to the variety of products as well as the characteristics and properties of the raw materials need to be investigated case by case and provide a solution according to the mentioned cases, so it is generally recommended to protect and maintain the works. And wooden products, especially inlaid works, the following items should be observed:
– Keeping traces of moisture and moisture fluctuations due to changes in the dimensions of the wood, as well as expansion and contraction in the product, which causes loosening of fibers and connections and destruction of the work.
– Keeping traces of direct sunlight, which causes decay of wood surface and discoloration.
– Keeping the works away from thermal fluctuations that cause cracking and change the dimensions and color of the wood.
– Preventing direct and indirect mechanical impact that causes loosening and breaking of the works.
– Preventing bending and tensile pressures on works and products that cause breakage and destruction in wood texture.
– Cleaning the inlaid works with soft (non-metallic) brushes to remove and separate grease and dust and not using fabric due to the damage that may be done to the protruding and sharp parts of the inlay.
– Use oils and coatings that are protected and suitable for the type of effect (beeswax, paraffin, polyester, oil paints, etc.) to enhance the beauty and resistance to changing environmental conditions.
– Replacement of coatings with appropriate coatings that wear off over time.
– Prevent fungal infestation and mold by using sodium pentacloro phenol, which weakens and destroys wood.
– Prevent the penetration of destructive insects such as beetles and termites by using insect repellent, such as DDT.
– Placing works in a suitable space; Especially decorative works should be placed in showcases and suitable shelves, so that they are both away from dust and have better storage conditions.
– Proper packaging at the time of moving and storing works to avoid possible injuries.
– The utmost care must be taken during transportation.
