Barberry is a fruit of longevity
Barberry is called the fruit of longevity, because it has miraculous healing properties and is effective in treating many diseases.
Elham Tajrizi, a senior expert in agricultural extension and education in South Khorasan,
said that barberry is a thorny shrub that is sometimes seen wild but with seeds in the foothills of the Alborz Mountains and other parts of the country.
It is a seedless plant with a plant height of 1.5 and sometimes up to two meters. Its leaves are oval, granular,
and these leaves grow in clusters along the blades. Its beautiful yellow flowers include six sepals, six petals and six flags.
It appears in May and June and dazzles the eyes of every passerby.
He continued:
This plant is resistant to salinity and water shortage, which is well compatible with water and soil texture of southern Khorasan.
Referring to the chemical composition of this plant, Tajrizi said:
The leaves, wood, bark of this plant contains berberine which is very toxic, the amount of this alkaloid in the skin of the plant is 1.7 but less
in the wood and leaves, barberry flower has another alkaloid called oxycantin And it is a kind of essential oil in a very small amount.
Referring to the healing properties of barberry, the senior expert of agricultural extension and education of South Khorasan, said:
Barberry is cold and dry in nature and due to having some organic acids has the property of reducing blood bile is excreted from the liver
and in people with severe thirst it decreases It reduces the heat of the stomach and liver.
Tajrizi said:
If barberry is mixed and consumed with hot medicines such as cinnamon and honey,
it will be used to strengthen the liver and improve diarrhea caused by weak liver.
He said:
Barberry fruit juice calms vomiting and its mixture is used with appropriate drugs to treat ulcerative wounds.
The South Khorasan Agricultural Extension and Education Expert added:
If people with low appetite eat barberry, their appetite will increase. People who have a cold temper or are accustomed to colic and bloating,
it is better not to eat barberry alone, but with sweet foods such as Eat candy and honey.
Tajrizi said that barberry can be called a fruit of longevity, adding that plants that are irrigated with barberry juice have a longer lifespan
than those that are irrigated with water alone.
He said:
Barberry has a fever and contains vitamin C, in this regard, has an effective and beneficial role in increasing the body’s resistance to diseases,
especially infectious diseases and colds. Barberry purifies the blood and stimulates urine secretion, as a result.
Urinary excretion increases Barberry sour fruit is used in traditional Iranian medicine to relieve itching and other complications,
as well as brewed to deodorize the breath.

The amount of vitamin C in barberry is more than lemon, one of its most important properties is the property of vascular adaptation,
especially uterine arteries, for those who suffer from gallbladder pain is one of the most valuable drugs.

Barberry is planted by cuttings from mid-autumn to late winter in holes half a meter deep and irrigated immediately,
and from the second year in autumn it is pruned and dry branches and low-stemmed trunks are cut.
Tajrizi stated:
This tree needs little water and is compatible with any soil, even saline,
and its base has been dug to a depth of 30 cm so that while air reaches the roots, more water penetration is possible.
He continued:
Barberry harvest time lasts from mid-October to the end of November and if it rains in autumn, it produces barberry fruit and if it does not rain,
the harvest will be later and its fruit will be sweeter. The harvesting method is traditional and often by cutting branches. It is easy to dry.
The senior expert of agricultural extension and education of South Khorasan, stating that high quality barberry is of the puffy type, reminded:
in this method, barberry is cut with the existing branch and dried in special warehouses and on scaffolding, and in another type, it is harvested by hand and in harvests. For this purpose, they are used for drying, which sometimes has a direct effect on the quality of the product.
