Carpet weaving in Kerman province in Iran
The most prominent and most prominent handicrafts in Kerman is carpet weaving, dating back to the Safavid era. At the beginning of the 20th century, Kerman was mentioned as one of the most famous carpet weaving centers in the world.
Interestingly, at the beginning of World War I, there were more than 5,000 carpets in the province. The province is now one of the major centers of handmade carpet production. The knots used in Kerman rugs are Persian and woven from high quality wool.
The wool used for carpet weaving is made from provincial cities and other parts of the country. For example, the cities of Kerman, Rafsanjan, Ravar, Mahan and… as well as the provinces of Khorasan and Kermanshah are areas where high quality wool is produced and used in Kerman carpet weaving.
The distinctive feature of Kerman carpets is the wide variety of designs and colors and it is rare to find a similarity between the two carpets in terms of color and role. The motifs that are most prominent in exquisite carpets of Kerman include Quranic frame, adobe, bergamot, green leaf, ceram, Mohammadi flower, pillar, and so on.
Two carpet weaving workshops in the province named Rhein and Khenaman are well known in the industry.
Among the woven rugs in this province, Afshar rugs are well known. This handwoven is woven by Tribe Afshar in Sirjan region. Tribe Afshar, who is of Turkish origin, along with their migration to Kerman province, brought their art and customs to this land. The popularity and authenticity of this type of rug is because it reflects the integration of the culture of the people of Azerbaijan and Kerman.
In general, there are major differences between carpets woven by villagers and Il Afshar. For example, in the rug weave, the Afshari tribes, the Turkish knot and the villagers in the province use the Persian knot. But in contrast to these two types of carpet weaving, in terms of the texture and motifs used in the carpet, they are influenced by each other.
For example, in some examples of nomadic carpets, although the colors used are nomadic, there are different motifs from the tribal motifs. Rugs in the province generally have their own fracture roles and motifs such as bird and bergamot are very common.
