Germany is the largest buyer of Iranian carpets
In the first nine months of this year, the value of Iranian hand-woven carpet exports reached more than $ 329 million.
According to the latest Iranian customs statistics, in the first 9 months of 2012, 4372 tons of handmade carpets worth $ 329.6 million were exported from Iran. This amount of exports in terms of weight and value compared to the same period last year decreased by 8.3 and 13.5 percent, respectively.
Asian countries accounted for the largest share of Iranian handmade carpet exports this year, followed by Europe, the United States and Africa. Germany, UAE, Japan, Lebanon, Qatar, Italy, Switzerland, Canada and the United Kingdom were also the largest buyers of Iranian handmade carpets in the first nine months of this year. China, Russia, Indonesia, Brazil and South Africa were other export markets for Iranian hand-woven carpets during the same period.
Recently, the Deputy Marketing Director of the National Carpet Center of Iran announced Iran’s share of global hand-woven carpet exports at 35%. According to Mojtaba Faizollahi, the sale of Indian, Afghan, Pakistani and Chinese carpets under the name of Iranian carpets and the global economic downturn are among the main reasons for the decline in exports of Iranian handmade carpets this year.
Iran’s handmade carpet exports in 1390 with a growth of less than one percent had reached more than 560 million dollars.
The largest volume of Iranian hand-woven carpet exports last year was related to Germany with 107.9 million dollars. The UAE came in second with $ 102 million in exports.
Italy also came in third with an export value of $ 29.9 million. Also, last year, about $ 400,000 worth of Iranian handmade carpets were exported to the United States.
Earlier, the president of the Union of Manufacturers and Weavers of Handmade Carpets, in an interview with ISNA, predicted that the export of handmade carpets would reach one billion dollars by the end of this year. However, Mehdi Kateb, the deputy head of the National Carpet Center of Iran, said that achieving this goal would require a $ 30 million budget for foreign advertising and a $ 10 billion budget for domestic advertising.
