Harvesting 5268 tons of dried walnuts from the gardens of Semnan province
Walnut harvest started from 1351 hectares of fertile orchards in Semnan province at the end of September in temperate regions of the province.
Engineer Rezaei, horticulture expert of Jihad Agricultural Organization of Semnan province, added: The total area of walnut orchards in the province is 1877 hectares, of which 1351 hectares were fertile and 526 hectares are seedlings.
It is predicted that 5,268 tons of dried walnuts will be harvested from the province’s orchards this year, which shows an increase of 100 tons compared to last year, and this increase in yield compared to last year is due to increased fertility and yield per unit area, he said.
Rezaei stated that the average yield of walnuts this year is 3,900 kg per unit area: The average yield this year, compared to last year, is about 100 kg of dried walnuts per unit area.
He said that increasing the awareness of farmers in the optimal use of macro and micro fertilizers to combat weeds, pests and diseases, etc. are important factors in increasing the average yield this year compared to last year and said about the cultivars of walnuts grown in the province: In the old gardens, more local cultivars have been used and in the new gardens, the top geotypes of the province and environmentally friendly have been used.
Horticulture expert of Semnan Jihad Agricultural Organization mentioned the high yield and yield of optimal product quality in terms of fat percentage, optimal quality of kernel in terms of whiteness and transparency, high ratio of dry weight of walnut to dry skin of walnut as important factors of geotype advantages in the province.
He also stated: in the development of new walnut orchards in the province, the use of grafted walnut trees is on the agenda of the organization.
In the end, Rezaei stated: Semnan city, with 1017 hectares of walnut orchards (168 hectares of seedlings and 849 hectares of fertile), has the highest area under walnut cultivation in the province.
