Imposition of duties on date exports

Imposition of duties on date exports

Following the disagreements between the government and the private sector about the need to impose duties on some goods or to release their exports, this time a new letter from the head of the Trade Development Organization to impose duties on dates exports has created new disagreements.

Due to the restrictions imposed on the Iranian economy and the need to fully supply the goods needed in the domestic market, in recent months the government has tried to limit or stop the export of some goods for a short time so as not to cause problems in the domestic market. .

Following these decisions and due to the significant increase in demand for dates during Ramadan, according to the information base of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, the Trade Development Organization in a letter to the National Date Association and private sector institutions announced that the export of this product from 15 April to May 31, 1399 will have complications.

Although the exact rate of these tolls has not been determined yet, but according to Hamid Zadboom’s letter, this decision was taken in a meeting of specialized working groups in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Industry, Mines and Trade.

Although the imposition of tariffs on export bans imposed in previous years is a softer policy, the private sector has been critical of the government’s decision.

According to the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Ahmad Reza Farshchian, head of the Tehran Chamber of Agriculture Commission, says that in 1397, the date production in the country was about 800,000 tons, of which 380,000 tons were exported, which is close to 50% of production Gives.

According to him, although the production of dates is expected to reach about one million tons this year, but the export of dates in the first eight months of this year is estimated at only 100,000 tons, one of the reasons is the export duties on this product; Therefore, the private sector has warned against discussing new tolls and believes that these programs should be reconsidered.

Although the order could be revised by the end of this year, it seems that the government and the private sector should reach a conclusion on whether it is possible to continue exporting duty-free while meeting domestic demand, or as the holy month of Ramadan approaches. Unrestricted exports will increase the price of dates in domestic markets.
