Iran is the first producer of barberry in the world
Iran is the first producer of this product in the world with an annual production of about 14,000 tons of barberry.
With a 98% share in the harvest of the production pole of this export product, the cities of Ghaen, Darmian and Birjand have the highest area under cultivation and production.
In this regard, Gholamreza Haderbadi, head of the South Khorasan Agricultural Jihad Organization, said that last year more than 12,800 tons of barberry worth 642 billion rials were harvested from the province’s orchards. It is 13 thousand hectares.
He announced the beginning of barberry harvest and predicted: about 13 thousand and 500 tons of dried barberry will be harvested this year, the rial value of which is about 750 billion rials.
According to Hader Badi, barberry harvest has provided employment for 55,000 exploiting families in South Khorasan province.
The head of the Jihad Agricultural Organization of South Khorasan Province stated: Barberry is exported to most cities in the country, but most exports are to Mashhad, Tehran, Shiraz and Isfahan.
Harvesting of barberry starts every year from the beginning of October and continues until the beginning of December.
Barberry, which is called ruby in the agricultural sector, with low need for irrigation, has been able to adapt to the soil and saline conditions of South Khorasan province and as the most significant garden product in the region has a significant role in the economy of rural households. The economic prosperity of the province, attention to the processing industry and support for exporters should be considered by the officials.
In this regard, the head of the Jihad Agricultural Organization of South Khorasan Province stated: The facilities provided last year about seven billion rials for the development of barberry orchards and improving the quality of export products (construction of barberry health center) has been paid to applicants. Also, from the place of the development plan of the agricultural sector to the plans of revival of nutrition and development of barberry orchards, long-term low-benefit facilities will be granted.
