Khatam art made of wood
The Iranian of this region has an ancient history, some of the most beautiful manifestations of which can be seen in fine arts such as inlay work, engraving, pottery, woodcarving and others. Meanwhile, art critics consider Khatam a symbol of unity in plurality and consider it an ornament of the valley of industrial arts.
As for Khatam’s art, it can be said that in a way it can be compared to putting mosaic pieces on a wooden surface. The only difference is that instead of colorful stones, small pieces of ivory are used in it, and its map, like carpet designs, is prepared with precise geometric calculations.
Professor Mohsen Sanei Khatam, the son of the late Haj Mohammad Hossein Sanei Khatam, explains this art from his father’s words: Khatam means the end of drawing. Perhaps the main reason for such a definition by the artist, who was one of the greats of Khatam’s art and in fact the “father of Khatam’s new era”, is that in Khatam’s art, the basis of Khatam’s flower-making and construction is geometric drawings, especially small triangles. The type of geometric shapes on that scale is not the same in other arts.
Therefore, Khatam can be defined in the current way as follows:
The art of decorating the wooden surface of functional and decorative objects using raw materials such as wood, bone and metal in the form of geometric shapes or knots. Because Khatam is the generator of knots, and in fact Khatam can be called a kind of knot.
