Mint extract reduces the pain of dysmenorrhea

The results of a study showed that supermint (mint extract) reduces the pain of dysmenorrhea due to its inhibitory effect on uterine smooth muscle contractions induced by oxytocin and prostaglandin F2a, like ibuprofen.

Dysmenorrhea is one of the most common complaints of women of childbearing age due to the release of prostaglandins. The World Health Organization has emphasized the use of herbal medicines because of the many side effects of chemical drugs.

Due to the high prevalence of primary dysmenorrhea and its adverse effects on quality of life, Mahboubeh umi Roknabad has conducted a study to investigate the effect of Supermint on primary dysmenorrhea in comparison with ibuprofen.

In this clinical trial, 100 girls aged 18 to 22 years were selected by purposive sampling method. The samples were then randomly divided into two groups.
In the first cycle (control cycle), people did not use any treatment, but during the next 2 cycles with the onset of pain, the Supermint group took 40 drops and the ibuprofen group took a 400 mg tablet every 4 hours if needed. Data collection tools included a questionnaire, Andrish-Melsum criteria for measuring pain intensity and hours to determine the duration of pain. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, Mann-Whitney, independent t-test and paired t-test.

The findings of this study indicate that the pain intensity of primary dysmenorrhea in both groups showed a significant decrease compared to before treatment and in comparison between the two drugs in all subjects, the pain intensity was not significant.

The results of this study showed: Supermint is able to reduce pain like ibuprofen due to its inhibitory effect on uterine smooth muscle contractions induced by oxytocin and prostaglandin F2a. Therefore, it can be used as an herbal medicine for primary dysmenorrhea.
