Onion harvest began in Hormozgan

The head of Hormozgan Jihad-e-Agriculture Organization announced the beginning of harvesting onion from the farms of this province.

Engineer Alinaghi Salehi, announcing the beginning of onion harvest from the province’s farms, noted: It is predicted that 218,750 tons of onion products will be harvested from the province’s farms this year.

Announcing a 16 percent decrease in the harvest of this crop compared to the previous year, he added: Due to the lack of a suitable sales market and the losses incurred by Hormozgani onion growers in the previous year, the area under cultivation of this crop decreased this year.

Salehi, stating that last year 12,400 hectares of Hormozgan lands were planted with onion and more than 330,000 tons of crops were harvested, continued: The winter onion harvest in Hormozgan continues until early May.

The official also stated that the onion harvested in the province, in addition to meeting the needs of the Hormozgan market, are also transported to the northern, Tehran and central provinces. He said: Bandar Abbas, Minab and Rudan are the most important onion growing areas in Hormozgan.

He considered the advantage of this product as harvesting in winter and marketability and reminded: the planting season of this product is from mid-November to mid-December and the harvest season is late February to late May.

The head of Hormozgan Jihad Agriculture Organization, stating that this province has the first rank of winter onion production in the country, said: Onion is effective in reducing cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, risk of heart attack and stroke due to the presence of sulfur, chromium and vitamin B6. It also reduces the growth of colon cancer, osteoporosis in women, joint pain and inflammation, and is useful in treating colds.
