Production of more than 10 thousand tons of barberry in Iran
Due to the increase in the area under barberry cultivation this year, it was predicted that more than 13,000 tons of crops would be harvested from the country’s orchards this year, but rainfall during the harvest season reduced 23% of the harvest of this crop.
Ali Hosseini, Vice President of the Association of Barberry and Saffron Producers and Exporters of South Khorasan, announced the production of more than 10,000 tons of barberry this year and said: Due to the increase in the area under cultivation of barberry orchards to 13,000 hectares, more than 13,500 is expected Tons of crop to be harvested, but the autumn rains during the harvest caused the barberry to decrease by 3,000 tons this year.
He said about the purchase price of barberry from the farmer to the market: At present, a kilo of pomegranate seed barberry is bought from a farmer for 6000 Tomans, which reaches about 7500 Tomans per kilo after cleaning and sorting, and 8 to 10 thousand Tomans per kilo after packing. It is at the discretion of the consumer.
Vice President of the Association of Barberry and Saffron Producers and Exporters of South Khorasan added: The price of puffed barberry, which will be offered in the market in the next two months, is higher than barberry and is expected to reach about 12 thousand tomans per kilogram. Meanwhile, last year, pomegranate seed barberry was bought for 3500 to 4000 Tomans per kilo and puffed barberry was bought for 7500 to 8000 Tomans per kilo.
Hosseini pointed out that 60% of the final price of barberry consumed after purchasing from the farmer said: The purchase price of barberry will increase by 30%, which is reasonable for the consumer to increase the cost of production of this product and increase the multiplication of other agricultural products. It seams.
Referring to the annual consumption of about 7,000 tons of barberry in the country, he noted: Last year, despite the production of about 10,000 tons, only 400 tons of barberry was offered to world markets, but this year due to increased quality and marketability of this product after implementation. Its quality improvement plan is to export 2,000 tons of barberry to world markets with a 200% increase.
Vice President of Barberry and Saffron Producers and Exporters Association of South Khorasan added: European countries, Persian Gulf countries, Canada, etc. are consumers of Iranian barberry, among which Germany, France and Australia are the main customers of this product.
Hosseini, expressing hope for an increase in barberry exports if the obstacles are resolved, said: According to the current situation, each kilogram of Iranian barberry is offered in the markets from 12 to 15 thousand at the same time. Transportation, the problem of return on investment, competitiveness and bargaining of barberry exports increase compared to last year.
