Findings of a student dissertation show that the metalworking and pottery industry of the Sassanid period had significant genius and innovation.

Mina Aslani, a master’s degree student in history at the Islamic Azad University of Najafabad, discusses the place of these arts in this historical period in her dissertation entitled Study of the metalworking and pottery industry in the Sassanid period.

The Sassanid rule is one of the most important historical periods in pre-Islamic Iran, and as a result, the art of this period can be considered one of the most glorious periods of art in ancient Iran. Art inspired by a long past and its signs can be seen today. For this reason, it is very important to study the relics and objects left from that period.

During the Sassanid period, significant progress was made in various arts. Including metalworking, which is one of the most important branches of art. Although many aspects of metalworking continued the work of previous governments, it matured significantly during this period.

Although pottery was less common, it continued to develop, because metal was more durable in terms of material and consistency, but it still had a special place due to the easier and cheaper construction of pottery. Metal and pottery works and objects in the Sassanid period are placed in different divisions. These works were decorated with motifs that were inspired by nature, material life, beliefs, convictions and myths of Iranian culture.

In this research, an attempt has been made to study the metalworking industry and the pottery art of the Sassanid period by the method of historical research and by the method of analysis and description.

To achieve such a goal, different applications of metal and pottery in fields such as household tools, war tools, jewelry, etc. have been studied.

This dissertation was defended at the Islamic Azad University, Najafabad Branch, under the guidance of Shokooh Sadat Arabi Hashemi.
