The director of Shadegan Agricultural Jihad said: ‌ Due to the problems and lack of water supply, some farmers turned to sesame instead of rice.

Hamid Matroudi stated: Due to the reduction of water quota and lack of rice cultivation, some farmers have tended to cultivate sesame instead of rice, and for this reason, sesame is currently to be cultivated on 500 hectares. Due to this issue, we will see a 70 to 80% increase in sesame cultivation this year.

He said that the area of paddy crops in Shadegan last year was 10,000 hectares, adding: This year’s cultivation operations will continue until the end of July and the necessary inputs for paddy cultivation have been provided and there is no problem in this regard.

Rice is grown in the Karun and Maroon watersheds, he said. There is no problem in Karun watershed, but in Maroon watershed, due to the sharp decrease in water flow, we hope there will be no problem in supplying water to the lands.

He said: This year, rice is to be cultivated on 4000 hectares of agricultural lands in Shadegan, which shows a decrease of 20 to 30 percent compared to the previous crop year.
