The effect of black cumin consumption on diabetic patients
The results of a research project show that daily consumption of cumin powder can be useful in lowering blood sugar in type 2 diabetic patients.
Type 2 diabetes is one of the most important and common endocrine diseases in the world, which kills many people in the world every year. Due to the importance of this issue and the lack of definitive treatment for this disease, researchers tested the effect of cumin consumption in overweight and obese people with type 2 diabetes.
The potential health effects of cumin have been reported in a number of studies, but the aim of this study was to determine the effect of cumin powder consumption on glycemic index, lipid profile and serum Nesfatin-1 levels in overweight and obese individuals with type 2 diabetes.
In this study, 60 patients referred to the diabetes clinic of Bu Ali Hospital in Zahedan participated. They were randomly divided into two groups of 30 control and intervention. The intervention group received black cumin capsules twice a day and according to what was reported in the Iranian Clinical Trial Registration Center, the control group received a placebo (capsule containing starch). All participants in the project thought they had received the intervention and were unaware that they were in the group receiving black cumin or placebo.
According to the results of this study, supplementation with black cumin in overweight and obese patients with type 2 diabetes was associated with improved insulin resistance, fasting blood sugar and general and abdominal obesity, such as BMI, FBS, HOMA- IR decreased significantly and Nesfatin-1 and QUICKI increased significantly. The proposed mechanism for improving type 2 diabetes is confirmed by increasing Nesfatin-1 levels as a result of cumin supplementation.
Cumin supplementation in patients with type 2 diabetes was associated with an improvement in most of the factors associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes, so that fasting blood sugar and weight of people consuming cumin were significantly reduced.
According to the National Health Research Center, the authors of this article, published in the journal Nutrition and Metabolism, say that the daily consumption of black cumin powder should be used to treat and prevent type 2 diabetes along with other treatments. .
