The United Nations has allocated $ 380,000 to rehabilitate and manage sturgeon
The capacity building project document for the rehabilitation and management of Caspian sturgeon was signed between the Ministry of Jihad for Agriculture and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
Nearly five million people in the Caspian littoral states are dependent on the Caspian Sea, especially sturgeon, for their livelihood and economy, said Engineer Ramazannejad, head of the Office of International and Regional Specialized Organizations.
Continued improper exploitation, smuggling of caviar and pollution of the Caspian Sea have put the life of this type of fish in crisis, he added.
This international project will be carried out with the participation of Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, Ramazannejad said. The United Nations has allocated $ 380,000 for the rehabilitation and management of sturgeon.
Sturgeon is a valuable fish that is in danger of extinction due to the management and executive issues of the Caspian Sea countries, said Dr. Riyad Sheikh, FAO Representative in Iran.
The issue of sturgeon breeding should be taken seriously, he said. According to this memorandum, other countries bordering the Persian Gulf must also implement common norms and behaviors in order to protect the reserves of this sea.
This is a serious warning that serious action must be taken in this regard, said Riyadh Sheikh Mubasher Sheikh, noting that sturgeon exploitation has been reduced from 40,000 tonnes to 4,000 tonnes.
