More than 1,200 Iranian rural women have begun weaving a huge rug worth $ 8.5 million,
which Iranian experts say is the world’s largest hand-woven rug.

Jalaluddin Bassam, director of the state-owned Iranian Carpet Company, added:
Weaving this carpet, which will cover an area of 6,000 square meters and weigh about 48 tons, will take a maximum of 14 months,
and the villagers will weave this carpet in two shifts. .

The Associated Press quoted Bassam as saying:
This carpet will be a symbol of Iranian handicrafts.

Bassam said: ‌
This carpet will be woven with traditional Persian designs and natural colors and will consist of two billion and 200 million knots.

The weaving of the world’s largest carpet began last month in the village of Baghshan, 800 km northwest of Tehran and two nearby villages,
and all its weavers are women aged 15 to 60, with 50 men supervising their work. After finishing the work,
they will travel to Abu Dhabi to connect the pieces of this carpet in Sheikh Zayed Mosque.

It should be noted that this carpet is made for Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

According to experts, the project has revived the carpet economy in northeastern Iran, while carpet prices in Iran have been falling.

Before the start of the weaving operation, this carpet was the largest carpet in the world in the Qaboos Azam Mosque located in Muscat, Oman.

The area of this carpet was five thousand square meters, its weight was 22 tons and its value was five million and 200 thousand dollars.
