In fact, the degree of prominence in the art of embossing refers to the ratio of the prominence of the third dimension of the embossed effect to the surface of the patterns, which causes differences in the shape and form of the embossing effect. These figures include:
Engraving: One of the simplest forms of engraving is the engraving, which is undoubtedly older than the other types. Engraving is actually created by creating a groove on the surface of the wood, and its main feature is that the text of the work does not have any protrusion in relation to the background, but is separated from the background by the created grooves; If the design is linear, the flat lines will be drilled by flat bed, chamber or throat, and the engraved pattern will be shown; This method is mostly used in gravure making and pen making.
Incomplete: In this method, the inlaid works have a small embossed effect, and according to its shape and amount of embossing, it can be said that the ratio of the size of the third dimension of the designs on the other two dimensions is low, so we know it as embossed embossing.
Embossing: In this method, the inlaid background is pierced to a greater extent than the less prominent method, so that it can be said that the designs have a more prominent effect; In fact, it is also known as semi-embossing.
All-embossed: In embossed all-embossing, the pattern has a very small amount of connection to the background, and this connection is such that it shows the artist’s efforts to empty the background and sometimes strengthen and enhance the resistance of the work. The difference between this method of inlay and volume making is in the existence of the context and the manner of execution; In volume construction, an attempt is made to see the work from all angles, while in the most prominent way, the work can be seen from the front and in some cases from the sides.
Volumetric or sculptural: In this method of inlay, sculptor and inlaid artist does not deal with the background even when the volume is non-integrated, but what needs to be removed is the extra loads around the design so that the effect and volume can be clearly seen. And be ready to install separate parts and be visible from all angles.
Hole: Another type of inlay that, unlike the embossed pattern, the patterns created on it, is worked in a recessed manner, called the hollow or negative method. This method of woodcarving is not very common in Iran, but the evidence and works obtained from ancient times show that this method was used in the preparation of cylindrical seals as well as molding, and even today it is widely used in decorating and making wooden works. they take.
