Walnut leaf extract is effective in preventing diabetes
The results of a study at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences showed: Dried walnut leaf extract is effective in the treatment and prevention of diabetes due to its antioxidant properties.
In this study conducted by Sedigheh Asgari and a group of colleagues at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of dried walnut leaves on the prevention of diabetes in rats was investigated.
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia due to impaired secretion, insulin function, or both. Walnut leaf has been used in traditional Iranian medicine to treat diabetes.
In this study, 18 male rats weighing an average of 180 to 240 g were randomly divided into three groups of non-diabetic control, diabetic control and prevention with hydroalcoholic extract.
To induce diabetes, alloxan was used at a dose of 120 mg / kg body weight and injected intraperitoneally. Rats were fasted for 16 hours, then blood was collected in heparinized tubes to determine insulin, glucose, HbA1c, LDL, HDL and VLDL.
The results showed a significant reduction in glucose and LDL levels in the groups treated with hydroalcoholic extract of dried walnut leaves. In addition, in the treated groups, insulin levels showed a significant increase compared to the diabetic group.
Histological findings showed that this extract prevented the destruction of pancreatic tissue in diabetic rats.
These results indicate that the hydroalcoholic extract of dried walnut leaves may be effective in the treatment and prevention of diabetes.
The effect of this extract is probably due to the presence of flavonoids and their antioxidant properties.
