Walnut orchards are traditional in North Khorasan

North Khorasan Jihad Agricultural Organization Deputy for Plant Production Improvement said: Most of the walnut orchards in the province are traditional and its trees have a lifespan of several years.

He added: We are looking to take these orchards out of the field and create fast-yielding walnut orchards instead.

He pointed out that the construction of new orchards with late cultivars takes a long time, he continued: late walnut cultivars take about 9 years to bear fruit.

Walnuts are resistant to grafting and do not accept any grafting, so if a gardener is asked about walnut grafting, they may claim that walnut grafting is not done, Tashkari said, referring to walnut seedlings.

He stated that recently the University Jihad of North Khorasan Branch has acquired the knowledge of commercial production of transplanted walnut seedlings, and specified: with this knowledge, quality seedlings with various varieties can be obtained. By implementing this plan, we will be self-sufficient in terms of the need for walnut rootstocks in the province, and it is easy to carry out the plan to develop and improve walnut orchards in the province.

Tashkari pointed out that investing in walnut orchards is a long-term investment, noting: By bringing these seedlings to market and planting them, we will create high-yield orchards in the province.
