Cumin essential oil is effective in treating inflammatory diseases and tumors

Cumin essential oil with its immunomodulatory properties can be used in many inflammatory and immunological diseases as well as as a factor in the treatment of tumors or as an adjunct drug.

Saeed Daneshmandi, PhD student in Immunology, Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran, has conducted a study to determine the effect of cumin essential oil on macrophages as well as tumor cell line.

In this experimental-laboratory study, cumin essential oil was purified from its fruit and in different concentrations on peritoneal macrophages and macrophages activated with lipopolysaccharide. Reduction ability test of 3- (4- and 5-dimethyltetrazole -2-yl) 2 and 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide was performed to evaluate the survival of macrophages and the amount of nitric oxide production in the culture supernatant was measured with a grease reagent.

Mice fibrosarcoma cell line was cultured in the presence of different concentrations of cumin essential oil and cytotoxicity was assessed by regenerative ability test.

Macrophage survival as well as nitric oxide production at concentrations of 50 and 500 ?g / ml of regenerative ability test showed that cumin essential oil in cumin essential oil concentrations was lower than the control group and caused a marked inhibition of tumor cells.
