288 thousand tons of onions are harvested from the fields of East Azerbaijan

The Deputy Minister of Crop Production Improvement of the East Azerbaijan Jihad-e-Agriculture Organization announced the allocation of 6,400 hectares of the province’s agricultural lands for onions planting.

Ayub Iranifam added: This year, 45 tons of onions are expected to be harvested from each hectare, and a total of 288 thousand tons of onions will be harvested and offered to the consumer market.

He said: Bonab city with an area of 2,500 hectares has the most onions cultivation lands in the province and Tabriz, Esco, Ajabshir, Shabestar, Malekan, Maragheh, Marand and Miyaneh are in the next ranks.

Referring to the methods of planting, holding and harvesting this crop, he said: Considering the policies of crop health, the Jihad Agricultural Organization has had continuous supervision over irrigation and fertilizer methods.

Iranifam added: The use of organic and biological fertilizers to produce a product free of toxins and nitrates has been recommended to onions growers.

He stated: Last year, due to the lack of proper storage methods, 150,000 tons of onions products in the province became unusable.

The Deputy Minister of Crop Production Improvement of the East Azerbaijan Jihad-e-Agriculture Organization added: According to expert estimates, the cost of onions production is currently 1,100 rials, which is offered in the consumer market at a price of 1,800 to 2,000 rials.
