Characteristics of a good barberry
The horticultural director of the East Azerbaijan Jihad Agricultural Organization said: Barberry is a good quality barberry that has no kernels and no wrinkles in its skin and is fully ripe, juicy, black and shiny and free from any pests.
According to the public relations of the Jihad Agricultural Organization of the province, Sadaleh Eskandari, on the sidelines of harvesting black barberry from the orchards of Osko city, announced the harvest of 30 tons of barberry from the orchards of the province and added:
He continued by stating that black, red and giraffe barberry are different types of this product that are planted in the climatic regions of Iran: only black barberry is planted and cultivated in East Azerbaijan. Autumn and November and December are the best times to harvest this crop in the province.
The director of horticulture of the Jihad Agricultural Organization of the province, stating that barberry shrubs can tolerate water in limited conditions and produce well in non-fertile lands, added: this tree needs little water and is compatible with any soil, even saline; In East Azerbaijan, this shrub is mostly used as a hedge at the edge of gardens.
He noted that East Azerbaijan is one of the most important centers of black barberry production, but has a small share of the supply and demand market.
He added: I hope that with the efforts of farmers in the Urmia Lake region, we can take effective steps in the development of agriculture in the province by developing barberry cultivation as a tree that needs less water.
Iran is the largest producer of barberry in the world, meanwhile, South Khorasan province, with nearly 97% of the land under cultivation of this product, produces 95% of the world’s barberry.
