A study by American researchers shows that a diet rich in walnuts can prevent Alzheimer’s disease or slow the progression of the disease.
Previous studies have shown that walnut consumption is associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer and enhanced male fertility.
Now, a recent study by US researchers shows that a diet high in walnuts can slow the progression of Alzheimer’s.
In this study, we looked at the effect of a diet high in walnuts on the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in mice, said Dr. Abha Chaohan of the New York-based Institute for Basic Research on the Development of Disabilities.
The researchers divided the mice with Alzheimer’s disease into two groups and gave one group diets containing six or nine percent walnuts for 9 to 10 months.
In humans, this amount is equivalent to consuming one to 1.5 ounces (28.35 grams to 42.52 grams) of walnuts per day.
But the second group of mice ate walnut-free diets during this study.
At the end of the study, the researchers tested all mice for learning ability, motor coordination and anxiety-related behavior.
The researchers found that Alzheimer’s mice on a diet rich in walnuts were significantly better than mice on a diet free of walnuts in all areas tested.
The researchers say that the high antioxidant content of walnuts, which is about 3.7 mmol per ounce, has helped prevent a decline in brain activity in these mice.
More than five million Americans have Alzheimer’s, and the number of people with Alzheimer’s is expected to triple by 1650 to 16 million.
The study is published in the journal Alzheimer’s Disease.
According to global statistics, it is estimated that currently 500 to 600 thousand Iranians suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.
