Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have discovered the hidden benefits of walnuts in fighting colon cancer.

Henna Holsher, an assistant professor of nutrition, is among those who have studied the effects of walnuts on gastrointestinal diseases as well as cardiometabolic diseases (including diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and heart disease). The findings are published in the journal Nutrition.

Nuts are considered a rich source of fiber, which helps to diversify and strengthen intestinal bacteria, and this research shows how walnuts help the millions of microorganisms that live in our intestines.

Walnuts are a rich source of antioxidants that, as a snack, play a positive role in reducing colon cancer, lowering cholesterol levels and even strengthening the brain.

Holsher et al. Gave some 18 volunteers 42 grams of walnuts at a time for 2 to 3 weeks, and some were tested without receiving any walnuts. They collected and examined the blood and feces samples of the volunteers at the beginning and end of the period. Then, by analyzing the collected data, it was found that walnut increased the level of 3 main bacteria named Faecalibacterium, Roseburia and Clostridium. These three bacteria produce the metabolic product butyrate, which plays a key role in intestinal health. Holcher recommends that more research be needed to measure butyrate more accurately.

This study also showed that walnut consumption plays a role in reducing secondary bile acids. While bile acids are natural compounds that help absorb lipids, cholesterol, and some vitamins in the digestive tract, some of them are toxic. These acids contribute to the distribution of colorectal cancer, both primary and secondary, and therefore a reduction in acidity can also help reduce the incidence of colon cancer.

Secondary bile acids are higher in people with colon cancer than in other people, and if we reduce these acids, we can prevent cancer from developing in the human body, says Holcher.
