Prediction of harvesting more than 270,000 tons of onions in Hormozgan

Off-season onions harvesting started from 9,100 hectares of agricultural lands in Hormozgan.

Hormozgan Jihad Agricultural Organization’s Deputy for Crop Production Improvement predicted that more than 270,000 tons of onions would be harvested by the end of the harvest season, which is five percent more than last year.

Seyed Hassan Hosseini added: Using healthy seedlings, proper plant nutrition and fighting pests and diseases is the reason for increasing production.

He stated that the onions harvest will continue until the end of May next year, and specified: the harvested product will be sent to the provinces of Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz and Mashhad.

Hormozgan Jihad Agricultural Organization Deputy for Plant Production Improvement added: 40% of the harvested products are exported to Iraq and Central Asia.

Hosseini, pointing out that the cities of Bandar Abbas, Minab and Rudan are important areas for off-season onions production in the province, said: Hormozgan ranks second after off-season onions production in the country after Bushehr. Onions with sulfur, chromium and vitamin B6 are effective in lowering cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, heart attack risk and stroke.

He pointed out: Hormozgan province with its hot and humid climate is a natural greenhouse in the cold season of the year.

Hormozgan, with the production of about 1.4 million tons of vegetables and summer crops, is one of the top three provinces in the country in the production of off-season products.
