Pottery is one of the oldest and most important handicrafts in Iran. From the beginning, humans have used pottery as a storage container for a variety of beverages and foods. Pottery in East Azerbaijan is also one of the most important and special handicrafts. In most cities, clay is used to make pottery. In the north of Tabriz, there is a red mountain that always shines in the sun, which is rich in iron. The clay of this mountain is used for pottery. But most of the pottery in Tabriz is made of white soil (kaolin) which is extracted from the mines of Zanuz city.
First, kaolin is extracted from the mine in the form of rock. Then moisten them with water, then spread them in the sun to dry. After drying, they are ground. Because white soil has little adhesion, glass powder in flowers is used to create adhesion. After the flower has rested for a day, it can be used and the wheel works.
After that, the body of the pottery is made with wheels and one day they are put in the workshop to dry. They are then placed in a greenhouse to dry completely. After that, the dishes are sanded and polished with a wet cloud. If the container has a handle, the handle will be added at this stage. At the end, the dish is ready to decorate. There are several ways to create beautiful patterns on pottery, including painting with paint and brushing, carving, embossing, and latticework.
In one step, the dish can be baked in the oven for glazing. But to reduce the risk of breaking the container, this is done in two steps. First, the dishes are baked at 700 خ C, then the cooked dishes are immersed in a dilute solution of water and mud, then the dishes are dried and prepared for glazing. For dishes with patterns and designs, they are first dipped in clear glaze. The dishes are then picked up to allow the glaze to dry, after which the glaze is wiped clean with a sandpaper so that it does not stick to the oven.
