The effective role of red onion in gout control

Examination of the results obtained from the study of Wistar rats showed that receiving red onion by reducing uric acid levels and increasing the activity of antioxidant paraoxonase can play an effective role in controlling hyperuricemia and metabolic disorders such as gout.

Hyperuricemia is a common metabolic disorder associated with abnormal increases in uric acid levels and increased production of free radicals and is an important risk factor for gout and oxidative stress diseases.
Considering the known antioxidant role of dietary polyphenols in controlling and reducing oxidative damage, a study was conducted to investigate the effect of red onion intake on uric acid level, lipid profile and serum paraoxonase activity in rats and rats.

In this experimental interventional study, 24 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: healthy and hyperurismic, healthy and hyperurismic, receiving red onions. Hyperuricemia was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 250 mg / kg potassium exonate.
red Onions were administered to animals at a rate of 5 g / kg by gavage. The duration of intervention was 2 weeks. Finally, serum uric acid levels, lipid profile and paraoxonase activity were measured and the data were statistically analyzed.

The results showed that onion intake in the healthy group had no significant effect on uric acid level and lipid profile, but caused a significant increase in paraoxonase activity compared with the healthy control group.
In the hyperuricemic group receiving the intervention, a significant decrease in uric acid level and a significant increase in paraoxonase activity was observed in comparison with the hyperuricemic control group. There was a significant positive correlation between paraoxonase activity and HDL-C concentration and a significant inverse relationship between paraoxonase activity and uric acid concentration.

The results show that red onion intake by reducing uric acid levels and increasing the activity of paraoxonase antioxidant enzyme can play an effective role in controlling hyperuricemia and increasing the body’s antioxidant capacity in hyperuricemic rats.
