Iran is the sixth largest producer of onions in the world

Iran is the sixth largest producer of this product in the world with a production of about two million and 700 thousand tons of onions.

China is the world’s largest producer of onions with 21 million tons and India is the world’s second largest producer with 8.2 million tons, followed by the United States, Pakistan, Turkey and Iran.

About 25% of onions lands are irrigated and the rest are rainfed.

The highest area of onions cultivation belongs to East Azerbaijan province, which has 24% of the production of this product, followed by Isfahan, Fars, Sistan and Baluchestan, Khorasan, Hormozgan and Khuzestan provinces have the highest production of this product.

About two million tons of onions are used annually for fresh consumption, and 35% (about 700,000 tons) of which must be planned to be collected and to prevent losses to the farmer.

Guaranteed purchasing, export formation and product warehousing are some of the solutions that have not been very responsive so far and have caused losses for farmers and consumers.

Because at one point in time this product was not harvested in the southern farms of the country due to a sharp drop in price and was bought from a farmer for 50 tomans per kilogram, and at other times its price increased to 1200 tomans per kilogram and became a shop window.

Given that guaranteed purchase is a temporary housing measure and exports also have marketing and packaging problems, we must provide suitable warehouses and cold stores to maintain and create a suitable opportunity to offer this product in the market until this product reaches a reasonable price. To be marketed.

According to the Director General of the Office of Agricultural Industries, about 30 billion tomans of credit in this sector, it is necessary to set up a warehouse and cold storage for onions storage with priority in three regions of Hormozgan, Khuzestan and Jiroft to reduce the recurring story of abundant supply of onions and potatoes in one year.
