Thyme of Hamedan is endangered

The expert of the research deputy of Jihad-e-Daneshgahi of Hamedan branch warned: Improper harvest of thyme from nature has caused the extinction and destruction of germplast of this endemic medicinal plant in the region.

Ramin Amiri added: Currently, thyme is not cultivated in bulk in Hamedan province, and the thyme that is now available in the market and perfumeries is collected from nature, and this unreasonable harvest has put this medicinal plant in danger of extinction.

He advised farmers and villagers to cultivate thyme medicinal plant because the climatic conditions of Hamadan province and the distribution of two types of hairy thyme in the province, makes the quality and quantity of essential oils and effective ingredients of thyme in the region to have favorable conditions. .

Emphasizing that farmers and villagers can cultivate this very valuable medicinal plant if possible, Amiri said: According to studies conducted in the province, thyme is a perennial plant that 80,000 seedlings of this plant are enough to cultivate one hectare. In the first and second year, 500 to 800 kg of dried thyme will be produced.

He pointed out: Thyme (Thymus spp) is a medicinal and aromatic plant that grows in most temperate regions, including Hamadan province, and among the important species in the province, we can mention Denaei, hairy and Anatolian thyme, which are distributed in different parts of the province. have.

The expert of the research deputy of Hamedan branch of Jihad-e-Daneshgahi stated: Different species of this medicinal plant in the mountains of Iran, especially in the foothills of Eghlid city, go under the name of Thyme Shirazi and in Hamedan it is called Azrabeh and in Koukherd of Hormozgan it is called Ousheh.

He added: Thyme grows in the plains of the middle plains of Bushehr province and in the dialect of Bushehr plain it is called Ousheh, also in Kurdistan province located in Bijar Gross city, which is called Azavi in ??the local Kurdish language.
